History of Fighting the Good Fight for Municipal Wireless
begins with Metricom's Ricochet

In 1999, Craig Settles worked for Metricom, the maker of the Ricochet wireless modem and network. The proprietary Ricochet network was the precursor of municipal WiFi and, in light of current events, what many believe was a concept ahead of its time.

As Director of Electronic Commerce, Mr. Settles helped create the public Web face of Ricochet and unified internal communications for several operational units through the company's intranet. While learning the intricacies of the technology and preparing marketing content, he realized that the value of high speed wireless wasn't as a DSL alternative which is how Metricom marketed it, but as a brand new way for organizations to do business.

After leaving Metricom, Mr. Settles took these insights and in 2001 wrote Wireless, Inc., a guide to creating strategies and tactics for using wireless technology to save money, make money and run a better business. These guidelines were updated in his book I Only Have ROIs for You (2004), and are incorporated into Fighting the Good Fight for Municipal Wireless.

Mr. Settles and Intellisync Chief Marketing Officer Rip Gerber co-authored Pilot to Profits: Getting in sync with the mobile mandate (2005). This book presents in-depth roundtable interviews with over 50 C-level executives, business managers and IT professionals that help readers more effectively manage pilot testing and deployment of mobile applications. Some of these lessons are applied to government operations in Fighting the Good Fight for Municipal Wireless .

While working on Pilot to Profits, Mr. Settles interviewed Dianah Neff and decided later that the Wireless Philadelphia story needed to be told. Political controversy and hype were overshadowing what was in reality a story about local government making sound business decisions to use a technology with the potential to change how the people's business gets done.
